Appalachia Team
The mission of the OSM Appalachia Team is the abatement of emergency abandoned mine land (AML) projects throughout eastern Kentucky in accordance with the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 utilizing fees paid by active coal mines. The team is charged with providing timely investigation, design, contractor bidding solicitation, and implementation of projects to effectively eliminate any immediate threat to the public health, safety, and general welfare. Emergency abatement includes, but is not limited to, reclamation of the following types of projects: Landslides; Subsidence; Mine Portals/Shafts/ Vertical Openings; Refuse & Seam Fires; Mine Drainage; Impoundments; Hazardous Gases and Dangerous Highwalls.
The team coordinates with the OSM Lexington Field Office and State of Kentucky Abandoned Mine Land office in evaluating project eligibility and status information. It also provides technical assistance relative to AML reclamation to Field Offices and State Regulatory Authorities within the Appalachian Region.
